It is possible and feasible to save fuel while driving through a process known as eco-driving. The idea is to practice smooth driving which reduces both fuel consumption and pollution.

The golden rule is to anticipate your next move, in other words to accelerate and brake less frequently.

In order to adapt an eco-driving style you must follow these simple rules:

  1. regles-eco-conducteurWhen driving a diesel vehicle, limit gear shifting to a maximum of 2,000 rpm.
When driving a gasoline vehicle, limit gear shifting to a maximum of 2,500 rpm.
  2. When a vehicle is kept at a consistent speed it needs less energy to move its mass and thus consumes less fuel. Vehicles with powerful engines are prone to more aggressive acceleration and faster speed-up. These habits need to be eliminated since they cause the vehicle to burn significant amounts of fuel. Drive at a steady and consistent speed to keep fuel consumption at a minimum.
  3. cadran-eco-conduiteApply a sensible gear ratio: For example, when going 30 mph drivers often stay in 3rd gear. It is better to be in 4th or 5th gear to allow the engine to slow down and thus burn less fuel.
  4. As mentioned earlier, you must anticipate your next move, in other words accelerate and brake less frequently. Anticipating your next move allows you to keep your vehicle at a steady speed. Whenever possible, take your foot off the gas, let the vehicle engine do the braking (down shift) and allow it to run “freely”.
  5. Up keeping and maintaining your vehicle is key, whether it be tire pressure, proper alignment or regular oil changes; these factors can affect your vehicle’s fuel consumption.
  6. Avoid keeping your vehicle loaded with unnecessary items such as roof boxes, bike racks, etc. These will interfere with your vehicle’s aerodynamics and mass.
  7. Decreasing your speed by 6 mph on longer trips will allow you to save up to one quarter gallon per 60 miles.
  8. As soon as your engine runs idle for longer than 30 seconds, it becomes more economical to turn it off.
  9. Hydrogen descaling with the use of a HY-Calamine device allows you to eliminate carbon residue that has built up in the engine and thus decreases fuel consumption. The engine will return to its factory performance. A clean and healthy engine burns less fuel and pollutes significantly less.
