Eco-driving

Driving and saving fuel seems impractical? However, driving economically is possible! Discover here the FlexFuel advice for “eco-driving”.

What is eco-driving?

The principle is simple: adopt a flexible driving allowing a drop in engine speed and thus a reduction in fuel consumption and polluting emissions. The golden rule? Anticipation ! However, a good knowledge and regular maintenance of your vehicle are also essential factors in ecological driving.

The 7 rules of the perfect eco-driver:

Rule n°1: use gear ratios correctly

It is common for a driver traveling at a constant speed of 50 km / h to use third gear. However, it is preferable to use fourth or fifth gear, thereby lowering engine speed. Result: reduced consumption and significantly reduced polluting gas emissions

Also, if you have a vehicle with a diesel engine, you should limit the gearshift speed to a maximum of 2000 rpm. On the other hand, if you have a gasoline car, do not exceed 2,500 revolutions per minute before shifting to the next gear.

Rule n°2: maintain a stable speed

A vehicle kept at a stable speed requires less energy to move. This reduces fuel consumption and consequently its pollutant emissions.

Cars with a powerful engine allow smoother acceleration and faster upshifts. Behavior to be banned for economical driving. These brutal accelerations, which most of the time lead to sudden braking, are the main cause of overconsumption of fuel. Therefore, prefer a regular stable speed to limit your consumption.

Rule n°3: engine braking

The anticipation, mentioned above, allows you to use your engine brake under the best conditions. How to do ? Lift the foot!

When going downhill and when road conditions allow it, taking your foot off the accelerator will allow your vehicle to benefit from the mechanical phenomenon that is automatically triggered when you stop accelerating! So it’s your engine that simply brakes on its own! You drive “for free” as your fuel consumption drops to zero!

Rule n°4: vehicle maintenance

There are many parameters of your car’s maintenance that come into play when it comes to fuel consumption. Tire pressure, incorrect geometry or regular oil changes are all factors inseparable from economical driving!

Rule n°5: vehicle weight

The more your car weighs the more it consumes. So avoid overloading it unnecessarily. Roof boxes and other bicycle racks disrupt the aerodynamics and mass of the vehicle, leading to overconsumption of fuel and therefore an increase in CO2 emissions.

Rule n°6: Speed and overconsumption

By reducing your speed by 10 km / h on long journeys, you will save up to a liter of fuel every 100 km/h. A significant saving when taking the vacation route, for example.

Rule n°7: when stopped, you shut down your engine!

As soon as the engine is idling for more than 30 seconds, it is better to simply turn it off. So in traffic jams or in front of a slightly long traffic light, you don’t hesitate to shut down your engine. It’s much more cost effective for you and much more environmentally friendly.
